Engineering insight into the performance and repair of glazed wall systems

At Brown & Beattie, we are experts inthe review and restoration of Curtain Walls and Window Walls. While these two glazing systems may seem the same, there are many differences in their appearance, installation methods, and performance factors.

What Are They and How Are They Different?

Curtain walls are installed outboard of the buildings floor slabs, acting like a curtainaround the building. The water, air, vapor and thermal control layers are located within the system itself.

Window walls are floor-to-ceiling window systems. These systems are installed between the floor slabs and can include panel components that cover or bypassf loor slab edges to provide a continuous window system appearance. The water, air, vapor, and thermal control layers must integrate with the surrounding building components.

As with other exterior cladding types, air and water leakage can be a common issue in both systems. Their specialized fabrication, installation methods, and the limited access to critical components make repairs particularly complex.
